NextGen Jobs, in partnership with Melbourne Water, have launched the careers of 10 diverse young people through the commencement of the 2019 Waterways, Conservation and Land Management Traineeship program.

The 18-month program will provide the Waterways & Land Management Trainees with the opportunity to build a meaningful career with Melbourne Water – an industry-leading employer with a strong commitment to diversity and skills growth.

Hayley Trimble, Manager of Waterways and Land Delivery Works Execution, Service Delivery, says Melbourne Water partnered with NextGen Jobs to leverage their experience in delivering a comprehensive program that provides an additional career pathway into Melbourne Water and supports the company’s vision to create a diverse workforce.

“Investing in inspired people within our teams, helps create a diverse and innovative workforce for the future – one which enables Melbourne Water to reflect the community we serve,” Trimble says. “Trainees will help build the capability of the Waterways and Land Delivery team to provide industry-leading safe, innovative and efficient customer outcomes.”

Based at the Brooklyn site, Amelia Kirley, 20, is looking forward to building a career that positively impacts Melbourne’s environment.

“I am looking forward to being able to help work towards a sustainable future by conserving and making everything in Melbourne liveable – working on waterways, catchments and everything, I feel like I will be making a real difference in this role,” Kirley says.

As part of the Waterways and Land Delivery Team, trainees will gain skills in delivering a range of activities including weed management, plant identification, revegetation, brush cutting and debris removal. They will have access to cutting edge technology and gain the latest industry knowledge. The activities they partake in will ensure overall natural resources management and provision of Melbourne Water’s waterways and land services.

On top of the on-the-job training with Melbourne Water, trainees will study a nationally recognised qualification, a Certificate III in Conservation and Land Management, through Holmesglen Institute of TAFE.

Trainees will have additional support from an experienced NextGen Jobs Mentor, opportunities for further internal training through Melbourne Water, access to a free Employee Assistance Program (EAP) and will receive all appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to perform the role.

We’re so excited that Melbourne Water are investing in their future workforce needs and intend to offer full-time career progression opportunities post successful completion of the traineeship program.
