Caleb Roy

Office of Public Prosecution

Caleb Roy undertook an IT traineeship, focused on Digital and Media Technology, with the Office of Public Prosecutions. After he completed his training in 2020, he started a full-time job with the Office, using the skills he developed on the job and leveraging his knowledge of the Office’s operations.

“NextGen Jobs gave me the opportunity to start my career with a great employer. It is the best thing that has happened to me professionally. It is definitely beneficial getting hands-on experience while studying. And I'm now working full-time where I undertook my traineeship in IT.”

Chloe McDonald

Victorian Government

Chloe McDonald is a young Gunditjmara woman who grew up in Nathalia. After she finished secondary school, she felt a bit directionless, so decided to pursue a traineeship. In October 2019, Chloe completed a Certificate III in Business through a traineeship in the Victorian Government’s Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) Biodiversity Division. “It helped me build on different aspects of myself, particularly my thinking and emotions,” Chloe says.

Now, not only does Chloe have a nationally recognised qualification and has begun a career within the Victorian Public Service (VPS), she’s been selected to be part of the inaugural Barring Djinang Vocational Education and Training Graduate Program while continuing her job with DELWP.

“I decided to do the traineeship because I was looking for new opportunities...I ended up thriving off the traineeship...it has given me more than anybody could ever imagine.”

Kai Ellison

Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning

From the Wiradjuri tribe of Central NSW, Kai has always been interested in IT. Because he’s more of a hands-on learner, he chose a NextGen Jobs Information Technology Traineeship at the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning to get him ready for a career in technology.

Undertaking his traineeship meant a move from the country to the city where he didn’t know anyone, but Kai credits his NextGen Jobs mentor with giving him the support he needed to be successful.

“My traineeship in IT prepared me for my career moving forward. I enjoyed the training within an excellent working environment with great people.

Anarra Hume

Department of Justice and Community Safety

Anarra changed her mind about what she wanted to do in the future so many times during high school. While her peers seemed so sure, she had no idea what she wanted to do. She stressed about whether her exam scores would get her into university, even though, deep down, she knew she didn’t even want to go to. It was just the only path she thought was available.

After graduation, she got a notification about a Business Traineeship at the West Gate Tunnel Project through NextGen Jobs. After some research about traineeships and a “this is too good to be true!” moment, she applied. “This was truly the best decision I ever made,” Anarra says, “doing this program transformed my life and has set me up for my future! I will never look back.”

Now, after completing her Certificate III in Business, Anarra works full time as an Executive Support Officer for the Department of Justice and Community Safety, and is considering studying law. “I always knew I wanted to do something that helped others, but I just never knew what it was,” she says. “By doing a traineeship I have had exposure to three very different types of work and once I got into my current role, I just knew what I wanted to do.”

“My traineeship experience was a once in a lifetime opportunity and I have no regrets. I grew so much as a person and learnt the most valuable and transferable skills I never knew I needed.”
