Steering Into the Future: The NextGen of Automotive Careers in Australia

In an age of innovation and technological transformation, the future of automotive careers in Australia is evolving faster than ever before.

The onset of electric vehicles, self-driving technology, and digitalisation has led to an exponential demand for new skill sets, forcing the industry to reinvent the way it attracts, trains, and equips its workforce.

One groundbreaking initiative that addresses this paradigm shift is the innovative partnership between NextGen Jobs and BMW Group Australia.Their joint venture, NextTech, is a three-year apprenticeship program designed to drive the future of the automotive industry.

But it's not just your standard apprenticeship. This venture is a nexus where traditional automotive training methods meet the cutting-edge technology that propels the industry forward.

Emily Milano, an apprentice at Doncaster BMW, is just one of the many who have benefitted from this ambitious initiative. "BMW has provided me the opportunity to expand my skills and confidence in a variety of roles including an apprenticeship and a traineeship," says Milano, adding, "I have learnt from some of the most experienced and passionate team members in a fantastic culture and I am very proud to represent BMW as a brand."

The Journey of a BMW Group Australia Apprentice

Embarking on this pioneering program is akin to commencing an exciting journey. As an apprentice, you'll take your first steps in understanding the brand, the products, and the dealership.

As a registered technician, after the successful completion of your apprenticeship and necessary brand assessments, you'll start to increase your productivity and efficiency in the workplace. At this stage, you'll also have an opportunity to inspire and guide apprentices following in your footsteps.

As you continue to excel, your journey leads to becoming a senior technician. This position involves taking part in further learning assessments and modules of brand training. In this role, you will explore heavier diagnostic work, moving beyond the routine day-to-day jobs.

Finally, once you've mastered the brand training, passed all necessary assessments, and dedicated a minimum of 9-10 years to the brand, you'll ascend to the role of Master Technician, where no job is too daunting.
