Who is Certificate III Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology For?

Certificate III Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology is an apprenticeship for people who want a career in the automotive industry because they have a passion for cars, love working with their hands, and value the diagnostic process of problem-solving.

It is suitable for school leavers who don't have qualifications or experience yet but want to learn new and useful skills that will support the advancement of their career into a Master Technician, Managerial Role, or Business Owner.

Light Vehicle Mechanic Skills

As a light vehicle apprentice, you can expect to work as part of a team to carry out repairs to cars and vans (a light motor vehicle has a gross vehicle weight of less than 3.5 metric tons.) You will learn about all aspects of light vehicle mechanics, such as diagnosing motor faults, carrying out routine maintenance tasks, and using diagnostic equipment such as scanners to repair a vehicle's Engine Control Unit (ECU.)

Light Vehicle Mechanic Apprenticeships include (but are not limited to) the following tasks:

  • Diagnostics on a variety of cars, vans, and utes

  • Diagnose and repair vehicles using special test equipment

  • Tune engines and make required adjustments

  • Replace broken or defective vehicle parts

  • Test and replace starter motors, fuel pumps, and defective alternators

  • Remove and replace components

  • Maintain brakes, suspension systems, and electrical wiring

  • Use diagnostic equipment to repair a vehicle's Engine Control Unit (ECU)

  • Minor trim repair or replacement

This apprenticeship is typically completed within 4 years, however with the NextGen Jobs and BMW #NextTech program, your apprenticeship can be accelerated so that you complete in as little as three years. It is a great way to earn while you learn as well as gaining valuable qualifications in a sustainable industry.
